Thanks to Program Co-Chair Susi Havens-Bezaire for
organizing this!
Please note: Our sister organization, I-P-A-P-A in Indiana,
has been invited to join us at the museum paintouts.
So many OPAS members enjoyed our
2006 & 2007 Museum Paint-In that we have arranged a return visit.
One of the most delightful surprises of a visit to the Louvre is
observing artists, young and old, replicating master works to
improve their skills. Five Ohio museums are opening their doors to
OPAS members in a similar fashion this coming January.
Due to Ohio weather
unpredictability in January, OPAS has collaborated with
The Columbus Art
Museum, The Cincinnati Art Museum, The Dayton Art Institute
and for the first time - the Toledo Museum
of Art and Springfield Museum of Art to provide a closer
destination to all OPAS painters. We have scheduled the Paint
Ins on different Saturdays to honor the request from members who
wanted to go to multiple museums.
OPAS will have at host greeting you at the
main desk of each museum. Each museum has a form designating
their rules for painting - be sure to print it, review it and
bring it with you to fill out. Obviously, it is important to
bring a drop cloth that protects the floor and to spread out so as
to keep traffic flowing. The Paint IN at each museum follows the
museum hours, and painters are asked to leave no later than 20
minutes prior to closing. Each museum has offered a gathering spot
at the end of the day for artist to chat and give feedback to each
other.
Each museum will allow OPAS to
paint items in their personal collections. You may visit special
exhibitions but not paint there.
A little intimidated to try this?
There is a wonderful synergy that develops when you are
replicating a work in a museum. You will be surprised at how much
you learn from this process! You'll also be surprised at how
respectful most museum goers will be. Yet, if you choose to,
you'll enjoy wonderful dialogues with strangers. Those who stop to
watch you paint will admire and respect your efforts and are
usually very generous with their compliments.
Saturday,
January 5
OPAS member Paul Reif hosted. He
writes:
"Arrived at
the Museum before 9am and two long distant travelers were
sleeping in their cars. Fred Baughman from Indianapolis and
Gary Chaconas from Newark. By 10am there was eight of us hard
at work. Charlotte Gordon our curator showed up to see if all
was going well and to say hi to OPAS.
"The museum photographer also took photos to put on the
museum's website.
"Looking forward to next month in Columbus."

Springfield Museum:
Paul Reif, Robert Davitian, Alice Seyfried, Fred Baughman, Diana

reach of your recognition, this seminar is for you. We'll

more. This is an interactive discussion, so come prepared
with your questions.

Lions…tigers…and bears…Oh my!
Where else can you paint North American, Asian, Australian, and
African animals, architecture and landscapes all in one day????
The Columbus Zoo is recognized as one of the top zoos in
the nation – not only for its outstanding commitment to
conservation and preservation but also for the fantastic
landscaping and architecture that enhances the visitor’s
experience!
Questions:
·
Where can we paint?
Anywhere! Most exhibits have inside (great for cold rainy days)
and outside viewpoints. There are plenty of water sites - with
ponds, wetlands and the Scioto River as major focal points. Ever
thought about painting in an aquarium or how about some
manatees???
·
Are
there places to get warm? The Congo River Market is a large indoor food court. There
are also lockers near the entrance that cost $1, if you want to
stash your painting equipment for a while.
Polaris, central
Ohio’s largest mall is also about 15 minutes away, on Route 750
(called
Powell Rd.)
So members could paint in the morning, do some xmas shopping and
return to see all the lights in the evening.
·
Where is the Zoo?
Columbus Zoo Website. You’ll find directions for the
new entrance and
how to get there as well as a
Zoo map.
·
Where’s the Kroger meeting spot?
3975 Powell Rd (also Route 750), Powell, OH 43065 Here is a
Google map
link.
·
Does the Zoo have reciprocal relationships? Yes! Here’s the
link.
Here’s
the Details:
·

·
