OPAS is about painting en plein air, French for “outdoors.”

At least once a month, our members meet at predetermined locations around the state. Our artists are actively engaged in painting on site, outdoors. We paint in all seasons and in all kinds of weather. Our program committee works with members to find out what and where they are interested in painting and seeks out new and diverse locations.

Membership in OPAS is open to all artists, regardless of age or experience, who want to work in the plein air tradition.

Those making application for membership should be aware of the following criteria for your work:

  1. It is the intention of this Society to foster the tradition of plein air painting. We look to artists in history, and in our own time, who have carried the torch of plein air painting. We must be mindful of the importance of plein air painting, its rightful place, and its importance in the history of art. Therefore, for purposes of exhibition our members must think of their work as fitting into one of the following three categories:

    • Alla Prima -- completed in one session on site. No work is done on the painting after leaving the site.
    • Completed on Site -- Completed on site in more than one session. No work is done on the painting after leaving the site.
    • Plein Air -- 90% of the painting is completed on site.

  2. No work from photographs done in the studio will be acceptable.
  3. Members are on the honor system in meeting the above mentioned requirements for exhibition.
  4. From time to time the exhibition committee will schedule a juried member exhibition in which members will be allowed to exhibit studio work completed from reference material such as Plein Air studies. These works traditionally have been larger in format, and would be labeled as studio paintings.

As a member, you’ll have access to and information on:

• PAINT OUTS • WORKSHOPS • ARTIST STUDIO VISITS

• SPECIAL PROJECTS • GALLERY OPEN HOUSES • WEB SITE EXPOSURE

Members will find a listing all of the activities OPAS has planned on the website, as well as related activities and outings offered by various other organizations. Once you are a member, you will receive an email inviting you to join the OPAS List Serve to receive email updates of information. With members all around the state, e-mail is the fastest and easiest way to keep in touch, keep you involved, encourage you, and keep you painting!

Membership in OPAS is open to all. OPAS offers many levels of membership starting with our artist membership. You will find that a variety of other categories are available for student members, sustaining patrons who would like to help support our cause. There is also a lifetime membership, a one time payment.

Many artists want to paint on location, but for a variety of reasons might not want to go out alone and paint? Some of you might not have painted for a long time; some of you may never have painted at all, but have always wanted to; some of you might want to paint and learn from experienced artists. You might have a child that loves art and who would like to spend time painting with working artists? We have members like you, and they enjoy meeting and learning from our more experienced members. Come and join us, and we’ll give you plenty of support and encouragement. If you’re not an active artist, or if you just want to support and enjoy the creative work of others, you will want to join us.

Working on location, and in full view of the public, our artists welcome the opportunity to expose the community to art in a completely unique way. Along with our art, we are used to being “on display.” Our artists are more than willing to let you watch. If you decide you would like to try your hand at painting, we have some art materials you may try for the day!

OPAS is planning paintouts for the 2009 - 1010 painting seasons, and is working on events through 2011 that you won’t want to miss, including paint outs, plein air art competitions, workshops, exhibitions and lots more. We invite artists and enthusiasts to join us as we continue to learn about art while exploring Ohio’s beautiful landscapes.

If you would like to make a contribution to The Richard Canfield Memorial Fund, please go to the registration form and you will find a space available for that purpose.
