Artist Statement : "I am a person drawn to painting the everyday scenes in nature that most pass by at 50 mph, their attention focused instead on the cell phone welded to their ears. I look for and find art in simple things: a deteriorating barn, an old tractor rusting away in a field, a majestic tree, an approaching storm. "Every time I go out to paint, I never fail to find something that astounds me, such as a tree clinging tenaciously to a cliff, a giant log jam on a creek, or the wind whispering through the feathers of a goose in flight. Everyday miracles are all around us, yet few really see them. "It is my intent to try to capture these everyday moments and hopefully persuade others to slow down their lives to see the world around them in a new light. Art records a moment in a different way from that of photography. Art is transferred to canvas by your emotional response to a subject, by truly seeing all the interaction of light, color and shadow, which I can only capture by painting En Plein Air." Artist's bio : Jim began showing signs of art ability in elementary school, and was later exposed to outdoor painting in summer school art classes in high school. He enrolled in the graphic arts program at Lakeland C.C in the 1970s, long ago before computers came into being. He worked as a designer and producer of custom hand-made signs, incorporating painted and bas-relief illustrations into his work. He retired from graphic arts several years ago, and dedicated himself to painting full-time. He enjoys the challenges that landscapes present, and that it’s a life-long learning process to continue to grow and evolve in one’s art. |
