Plein Air has a first hand interaction between the artist and his subject. The rewards are immeasurable.
I have been painting with focus since 1992. From an early age I have had a love of expressing myself through my art. Even in the U.S. Air Force, I had an outlet for my creative side, working several years as a graphic artist. After my tour of duty, I enrolled at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where I received my degree in commercial art. During the succeeding years I pursued a career in advertising. I continued developing my appreciation of fine art through reading and traveling to local and national exhibits. After vacationing in Northern New Mexico, Southern France, Paris and Monet's Giverny, The painter in me came to life and I was inspired to put brush to paint. I have developed an impressionist expressive style. My pictures have a luminous quality created from initial glazed layers that I allow to show through beside broken strokes of impasto. Often choosing landscapes, I like to create harmony with colors inspired by nature's hues. I want the viewer to see and feel the emotion that went into every stroke. This is something that can be felt and seen in the texture of the carved paint made by the stiff bristle brushes that I used to create them. They are as much a part of the composition as the colors that I choose. I want the viewer to see the evidence that the paint was manipulated and to image the emotion I felt as I made the gestures and marks that created the scene they are communing with.

"Central Ohio fields serve as inspiration for landscape "

Soy Bean Fields Forever by Richard Clem

Maybe Soy Bean Fields Forever isn’t as catchy as the Beatles’ Strawberry Fields Forever, but Richard Clem’s painting does full justice to the humble Midwestern bean.

His painting, ablaze with the orange and rust colors of fall, along with more of his central-Ohio landscapes, are on view Downtown in the Vorys Gallery of the Jefferson Center for Learning and the Arts.

October Sky — Miller Paul also contains a soybean field.

"I got enamored with soybean fields. The light was just hitting them so," Clem said.
"I look for something in the landscape that talks to me. Something always strikes you when you are out there."
"And then it’s: Can I capture it? "

Clem works with colors and textures, using painterly techniques to put his stamp on a scene.

"Instead of creating just a picture, I want to create a work of art."

"Richard Clem — Stillness & Serenity" continued through April 13 in the Jefferson Center for Learning and the Arts, 65 Jefferson Ave. For hours, call 614-228-7441.
