Artist Bio :
Although I have always loved the arts, I never
actually “did” any art until 2000, when I took my first art class. I
started with drawing, and then was attracted to oils; I have not looked
back. I have sat in on CCAD evening classes, have attended local studios
and workshops, and in 2004 I joined OPAS in order to find a community of
outdoor painters. My first plein air experience, in the pouring rain, I
will never forget. Outside of my work (OSU professor, medieval
philosophy), my three loves are traveling, running and painting. I often
use my training runs (marathon and duathlon primarily) to scope out
painting sites; I then can return later in the day to paint. This year we
moved to a house on the Olentangy River, on the floodplain; and so even
from my own study I now have a never-ending panorama of plein air studies.
I suspect I’m a better runner than painter, but the two
activities seem to be mutually complementary. In both cases, I’m very much
an amateur, and constantly discovering new things. I am constantly
reminded what it means to be a student of nature. Both activities allow
for a high level of meditative awareness of nature, and a studied
appreciation of the outdoors. I have been fortunate to be able to travel
overseas fairly often for conferences, and have used those opportunities
to paint in Provence, Amsterdam and Greece. Spinoza reminds us that we are
but “a speck in eternity”; but what greater joy can there be than to
participate in eternity by rendering the temporal a thing of beauty.
