Tom is driven by a passion for excellence. He spent his earlier years as a nationally known figurative illustrator. More recent years has afforded him the privilege of a fine art rebirth, painting from his heart en plein air and giving year-round workshops. Among many other recognitions, Tom has been juried into the American Watercolor Society Show, featured in Artist’s Magazine three times, and won Best of Show 2006 and Artist’s Choice Award and Honorable Mention 2007 at the Annual Cedarburg Plein Air Painting Competition. Tom gravitates to the urban environment and architecture for much of his inspiration. But being a country boy, he is humbled by God’s shear beauty in nature and the human form. COMPETITIONS & OPPORTUNITIES:

OPAS members only:

Columbus Museum of Art
The Russell Page Garden at the Columbus Museum of Art will close in Oct of 09 due to the museum expansion. The garden club of the museum invites the Ohio Plein Air Society to capture as many impressions of the garden as possible during that space of time. The photographer Tony Mendoza will also be making a photo record of the garden. In the fall we anticipate a show combining the efforts of the two media. Details have not been finalized for this yet.
TO PAINT: you must contact David Leach, director of facilities and head of security
614-629-0321 or
david.leach@cmaohio.org at least a day before coming to paint.

Russell Page was a well known landscape designer, primarily in Europe, with a number of gardens in the US. CMOA has one of the few Russell Page still intact in the United States, so it is hoped we will at least have a variety of impressions of it before it is replaced.
For further information:
• please call Andrew Mitchell at 740-439-3042
• or e-mail at creekwod@clover.net (yes, just one "o" in creekwod)

OPAS is partnering with the Garden Club and several other groups of the Columbus Museum of Art in an exhibition/live art auction fundraiser for the museum. Plein air works created in the Russell Page Garden - just off the lobby – will be displayed for one week in the Columbus Museum.

If you are interested in this opportunity, here are the details, as of 7-1-09:
• You must be an OPAS member to take advantage of this opportunity
• No entry fee.
• 25 – 30 paintings will be needed for this weeklong exhibition
• The paintings will be screened by a small committee to insure the highest quality of work
• No work over 24” x 30”
• Paintings must be framed
• These works will be on display in the lobby, on easels
(not sure if the museum has the easels or if artists might need to provide their own)
DEADLINE to turn in work September 1
(exhibit might be screened from digital images, or from actual works)
•It has not been determined how many paintings each artist may have screened.
•If you plan to paint for this opportunity, please email debra@ohiopleinairsociety.com ASAP who will be keeping a head count.
Once we get an idea how many artists wish to participate, we can determine how many works from each artist may be considered. Depending on the number of artists who wish to submit work, and to be fair to the artists, the committee may limit only one 24” x 30” from any one artist.
•Submission Form will be emailed to those artists submitting works to this event.

Before you paint:
TO PAINT: you must contact David Leach, director of facilities and head of security
