Artists, you must bring a drop cloth, use odorless solvents, and
clean up after yourself. Most museums allow you to have business
cards available, but you cannot solicit sales on site at the
museum. And as always, be polite to visitors and museum staff. And
wear your name tags!

Paint-in:
I thought the museum paintout went very well.
There were three of us. Ruth Ann Sturgill came from Lima, Michelle
Walker from Wapakonetta, and myself from Huber Heights.
It was a pleasure to paint there.
The museum staff was gracious and helpful. They
were all interested in what were painting, as were the museum
visitors who stood back and quietly watch us.

Judy Griffith, Katie Pursley, Cathy Mulligan, Elayne Bozick, Dino
Massaroni, Susan Dexter, and Virginia Rhinerson. Oh . . . and I was

2009 Testimonials:
"A
BIG thank you to Jeff Risner for his grand reception and
thoughtful planning for the Athens Paint Out this past weekend.
There was a wonderful assortment of plein air artists present and
ready to tackle the blooming southeast Ohio scene. We had a
"fun" critique afterwards at the historic Dairy Barn Cultural Arts
Center. Thanks again, Jeff."
- Martha Carmody, Cincinnati
"At
approx. 9 AM Coffee tea, and pastry was in abundance and maps and
Athens county literature was provided along with plenty of
courtesy, friendship, and introductions. Lee, Bill, and I met up
with Kit Dailey who joined us and became our guide and led us to a
great mill site where we set up on the opposite side of the river
at the HABITAT for HUMANITY center, where we spent about 5
windy hours, doing our thing. I enjoyed the output of our groups
efforts . . . thus I say it was a venture well worth the time and
effort.

From the Sauder Village website:
From the sheep shearing and planting in the spring to
harvesting and preserving in the fall, every day at Historic
Sauder Village is unique and special! Experience history up close
as our costumed staff leads many activities and demonstrations of
daily rural life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Depending
on the day and season, your visit may include hymn singing,
demonstrations of old printing techniques, samples of a 19th
century recipe or a chance to taste a homemade pickle or help with
food preparation.
The craft buildings and studios are home to several nationally
recognized craftsmen working with traditional crafts in both
historic and modern interpretations. With daily displays of their
skills, these artisans perpetuate American craftsmanship right in
front of your eyes.
In 1934, local farm boy Erie J. Sauder (1904-1997) with plenty of
vision, determination and God-given mechanical ability, founded
the Sauder Woodworking Company, today a world leader in
ready-to-assemble furniture.
Although he was always a forward thinker, Erie was well aware that
the past had paved the way. He was particularly partial to the
stories of his ancestors who had been among those who settled NW
Ohio's Great Black Swamp in the mid 1830s.
That's why, in the 1970s, he had dozens of structures, built by
hand a century earlier, moved from locations throughout NW Ohio to
create the Sauder Village.
Today, the third generation of his family oversees the Village,
which includes a 350-seat restaurant; a bakery; a campground; a
98-room country inn and an exhibit/performance center, Founder's
Hall.

nature. Edie met the artists at the Nature Center. New and old
"OPAS friends in art" met and chatted over the coffee and donuts

Thanks to Debra Joyce & Martin Dawson for hosting this paintout!
Enjoy the beauty of Ohio in winter and the challenge of
painting a winter orchard.
We hope for some snow, which makes turns the winter orchard into a
stunning site.
In 2009 OPAS members gathered at the orchard and painted on a
25 degree F morning. There was no snow, but lots of apples still
clinging to the trees. The camaraderie was high, and the paint was
stiff, but OPAS artists turned out some lovely painting under
trying conditions.
Artists brought back their paintings to the Dawson home for a potluck
and critique. By Noon, the sun was breaking through. It was still
25 degrees, but we were all saying, we should go back out and
paint!
For 2010, the Dawson’s propose a slightly different format:
Breakfast at their local dinner Nancy’s Nutcracker (to give the
day a little time to warm up), painting, and critique with warm
fire, and snacks back at their home five miles from the orchard.
It can be cold, but misery loves company and OPAS
painters have always had a great time trying this. Still, if you
want to just come for breakfast, or the critique, that is fine
too!
Thank you to Lynd's, who has always been welcoming to
Debra and OPAS artists.

of Rt. 310 and Morse Rd. There are driving trails through the
orchard as well. You can paint from the parking area or drive
through the orchard - providing the ground is not soggy.
1:00 PM (or when you get cold) - head back to the Dawson
house (5 miles from the site)
for a warm fire,
a hot drink, and sandwiches and soup.
2:00 PM – Critique - everyone participates and learns a lot.
